Enjoy breakfast this morning before departing for the state of South Carolina. We expect an early evening arrival in Charleston. Relax and settle in at our hotel. The Courtyard Marriott, Charleston Historic District (843) 805-7900 for the next three nights as we enjoy the Southern delights of Charleston.
After enjoying a continental breakfast, we will join our local southern guide for a historic tour of Charleston. We will finish our morning at the city market where you will have time for lunch on your own and this afternoon and evening will be yours to spend some free time discovering Charleston on your own. There is a free trolley across the street from our hotel that will take you to downtown Charleston where you can walk, shop and dine enjoying  the evening in Charleston.
This morning, after a continental breakfast, it’s off to Drayton Hall, the best preserved of the plantations, and a visit is a fascinating introduction to the art and science of historic preservation. We’ll continue on to Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark, birthplace of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and home of America’s oldest landscape gardens. See this carefully preserved plantation as the Middleton Family did in the 18th century. After an included lunch , board a handcrafted plantation carriage at the Visitor Center and journey through the surrounding areas of America’s oldest landscaped gardens, led by an expert guide and driver. Experience the beauty of the plantation from a carriage that travels through a lush bamboo forest into scenic woodlands and around the bank of flooded rice fields. Passengers can relish far-reaching views of the Ashley River and marshlands, a habitat for countless wading birds, ospreys, bald eagles and alligators. Our adventure continues with a guided tour of Middleton Place House, built by Henry Middleton in 1755 as a gentleman’s guest quarters, and the only surviving portion of the three-building residential complex that once stood overlooking the Ashley River. The landscaped garden remains, sweeping down to the Ashley River in broad terraces, sculpted by slaves. You’ll have time to relax and unwind before we enjoy a wonderful dinner together in Charleston, a lovely way to finish our stay here.
After a leisurely breakfast we’ll be on our way to the State of Georgia and the wonderful city of Savannah. There will be a lunch stop (on own) on our way. We will meet our local guide and enjoy a 2 hour tour of Historic Savannah. In 1733, James Oglethorpe designed Savannah around 24 tree-filled squares. Spanish moss hangs from oaks arching over antebellum mansions, and in every square there are benches, where people eat lunch and enjoy the trees and flowers. Enjoy the eccentric history of the thirteenth colony. In Spring, enjoy the dogwoods and azaleas. We will check into our hotel, the Spring Hill Suites by Marriott in downtown Savannah Historic District (912) 629-5300 where you can walk and enjoy this beautiful city. Tonight is yours to enjoy on your own in historic Savannah.
Today, we travel to the Golden Isles, barrier islands about an hour down the coast from Savannah. We’ll take a tram tour of “Millionaire’s Village” on Jekyll Island and have a tour around St. Simon’s Island. The gardens of “Millionaire’s Village” the Jekyll Island Historic District, are beautifully kept and dripping with flowers at any time of year. We will return to Savannah, where we will enjoy dinner together tonight and then the evening is your to relax and enjoy quint, historic Savannah.
This morning we continue our Southern Adventure, travelling through Georgia and South Carolina to arrive in Asheville, North Carolina in time for lunch (on own) before we enjoy a guided tour of Baltimore Estate, the country Chateau of George W. Vanderbilt. An estate host will join us on this unforgettable tour! We will enjoy dinner together in Asheville before retiring at the Holiday Inn Baltimore East (828) 298-5611 after a wonderful day.
